Den amerikanske retorikeren Edwin Black mener at retorikk er moralske handlinger som kan dømmes ut fra moralske prinsipper. Ethvert idiom forutsetter en ideologi, og enhver diskurs forutsetter en leser med en viss karakter. Black analyserer John Birch Society’s bruk av metaforen ’kommunismen som kreftsvulst’, og er nådeløs i sin dom over deres politiske retorikk.
