Abstract

The use of the seminar in higher education is based on the idea that people develop their knowledge, skills and values discussion with one another. But we have limited understanding of what it is in the seminar that supports or hinders learning. This paper offers a contribution to greater understanding through a study of dialogues in seminars held in post-graduate education. From a pedagogical rhetoric perspective on learning, Aristotle’s approach to knowledge, and a contextual analysis reveals three different types of talk, with mediating, commenting and probing characteristics. The analysis shows that the variation in ways in which seminar participants express themselves has significance for the dialogues of the seminar becoming a resource for learning with colleagues.
