Do as I Do! Imitation in Rhetorical Voice Training

Imitation as a didactic method in rhetorical voice training primarily involves the teacher’s demonstration of vocal exercises. Since such training aims at developing the student’s individual voice and performative talent rather than reproducing the teacher’s vocal characteristics and body language, it remains a challenge for the teacher not to leave too much of her own individual imprint on a student’s actio. The article presents a number of pedagogical focus points aiming at ensuring the autonomy of the student within the framework of modern voice training that stays anchored in the classical practice of imitation. Focus points include the deliberate use of meta communication; explicit and dynamic role assignment for both student and teacher to support vocal growth; and the use of new technology to introduce the student to other model voices.
