Moderne psykologi har noget at lære af retorikken fastslår socialpsykologen Michael Billig. Han afviser den kognitive psykologis billede af det tænkende menneske som en tankeløs regelfølger og informationsorganisator. I stedet fremhæver han det retoriske billede af menneskelig tænkning som dynamisk og social. I retorikken er det tænkende menneske ikke en opgaveløser, men en argumenterende debattør.
