Abstract

The so-called “New rhetoric” associated with Chaïm Perelman (1912-1984) has continued to influence and stimulate research on the subject of rhetoric as it is practiced today. In the present article islamologist Philip Halldén discusses Perelman’s influential theory in relation to a medieval Muslim collection of sermons, ascribed to al-Hurayfish (late fourteenth century). Besides presenting this little known example of medieval Muslim rhetoric Halldén discusses whether, and to what extent, Perelman’s theory may be of assistance in the study of this kind of material. The conclusion is somewhat pessimistic as, the author argues, Perelman’s “New rhetoric” is precisely a theory of argumentation that tends to downgrade certain phenomena which are significant in the case of al-Hurayfish’s sermons.
