Abstract

There is an ongoing struggle in the public sphere in Denmark about deprived neighborhoods, or what has been termed “ghettos” in public Danish discourse. This struggle is not about gangs trying to prevent police cars from entering their neighborhood by throwing stones at them, but is a battle of words, and the players are not young immigrants and policemen, but rather media, politicians and ad agencies, each trying to depict their own images of these neighborhoods. Based on a critical discourse approach the article will show how this battle of words takes place, and how it leads to the creation of images and counter images of the neighborhoods and their residents, exemplified by the Odense district of Vollsmose, which are then reproduced and recontextualized in new settings, by which they gain increased authority, power and legitimacy in the public debate.
