Social meaning – a rhetorical question

In rhetorical theory, the question of how meaning is produced has traditionally been dealt with in terms of the intentions of the orator to influence an audience through speech. Today, in the wake of the fundamental critiques within the humanities and the social sciences that were, in the late 20th century, directed at concepts like intentionality, meaning, knowledge and power, it seems necessary to complement and to a certain extent rework this traditional rhetorical view of meaning. It is no longer sufficient just to look at how meaning is generated in typical rhetorical situations. This article argues for extending the notion of rhetorical meaning to the more comprehensive concept of social meaning, as this concept may be construed within a certain strand of philosophical anthropology, departing from the theoretical works of Ernst Cassirer and Cornelius Castoriadis.
